We are all doomed

April 3rd, 2008

Everyone’s probably already seen this, since it’s been making ‘the rounds’ for a few weeks, but it’s still worthy of a post – if only as a warning of what’s to come.

This frightens me for two reasons. One, it just looks freaky. If I met this thing in the forest, I would be running screaming in the opposite direction. It’s just wrong on so many levels and belongs in a horror movie, not in reality. We’re spitting in the face of God, people, and it’s going to

Secondly, the guys who built this thing are contributing to the impending doom of mankind. Robots will eventually take over the world, we know that – it’s just a question of time. Still, there’s no need to hasten the process by making the fuckers this mobile and resilient. These Judases are betraying mankind by working for the enemy, and someone must put a stop to it. Preferably right now, or we’ll have to invent some kind of time machine in the future so that we can go back and put right what once went wrong. (Crazy scary dog robots, for example.)

Personally, however, I, um, welcome our future robot overlords and have nothing against any kind of artificial lifeforms, mechanical or biological.

I’m a little late on the BGE bandwagon. I just downloaded it from steam a few days ago. I’m loving it so far. It really is a charming game.

The comments by Ubi’s CEO really concern me

Yes, that sounds so… “Dreamfall” …

Ubi’s CEO is just looking for an excuse instead of admitting that their lack of marketing was the reason for the failure of the original game. BG&E was one of the best action-adventure games ever, and I highly doubt the team at Montpellier is going to dumb down the game in an attempt to get a few more sales from casual gamers. If Funcom insists on implementing action elements into the next TLJ games, then I hope they take a good look at BG&E to show them how its done.

The fighting sequences in BG&E were not bad, but I wouldn’t consider them to be outstanding. Still they ran circles around the fighting sequences that Dreamfall gave us.

But based on Guillemot’s comments, I wonder if BG&E 2 may actually have less fighting sequences and more exploration. That did work well for TLJ, which had no fighting.

I just home that BG&E 2 doesn’t turn out to be some dumbed down mini-game collection or something…

Its a little stupid by them to say this, when you have to buy and play the game to find out the difficulty.

Jason, I agree that the combat in BG&E wasn’t outstanding but the thing is that it didn’t have to be. It was a simple but intuitive combat system that really anyone could figure out, and more importantly the action blended in with the rest of the game. That’s exactly the kind of combat system Dreamfall needed, but unfortunately the end result was so bad that the game would have been better if they had just removed the combat sequences altogether.

Less fighting in BG&E 2? Perhaps, but I always considered BG&E to be a perfect example of balancing different gameplay mechanics. I hope Ubisoft won’t force the development team to change the game simply to try and turn it into a million seller. They should just worry about marketing the game instead.

Edge_343: Well you have to remember though, given the choice between a great game or a million seller, a company will always choose million seller.

Ubi’s marketing of BG&E 1 was terrible though. It was a joke, and that really hurt the game’s sells. I’m sure it could have done better.
