Dream a little dream(fall) for me

February 27th, 2009

Have I used this headline before? I must have. My imagination runs in perpetual circles and my memory is shit. I come around to the same conclusions and phrases repeatedly, thinking, hmm, that’s not bad, that’s new, but NO it isn’t NEW, it’s the same bloody headline I used two years ago.

Anyway. The dream of Dreamfall is very much alive, and it’s more than a dream. A lot of people – a lot of people – have asked about the status of Dreamfall Chapters. Not everyone checks the archives, which I would encourage. As I’ve said before, when there’s news you’ll be the first to know. Honestly. It’ll land right on top of this page and it will stay there a good while. To read whatever there is to read on Dreamfall Chapters, just click the little Dreamfall category link. That will point you in the right direction and provide you with whatever information is available. Nothing is omitted. It’s all there.

But I guess it’s time for an update regardless, so here it is:

Cacoethes scribendi

June 1st, 2008

Age of Conan has launched, summer has arrived, I’ve been absent for way too long and it’s time to answer some questions.

So, when should I mark my calendar to play the new episodes of TLJ that are going to come out?

Wallpaper, tattoo, and other kick-ass questions, answered

November 26th, 2007

I’ve got a request for you – do you have a wallpaper/larger version of your site banner? It’s just too damn awesome.

Nope, but the original image is available in high resolution elsewhere, so it shouldn’t be too difficult for someone with the time (and the Photoshop) to knock something together.

I was wondering if you had a good, hi-res symbol of the Balance from The Longest Journey, as I was thinking of getting it as a tattoo on my upper-arm.

The things you find while idly browsing the network on a Friday afternoon (part 3)

November 20th, 2007

It’s not Friday. It’s not even Monday, but Tuesdays are good, too. Tuesdays are, in fact, my fourth favourite day of the week, and, as such, deserve more attention. Tuesdays are often lost in the shuffle between Mondays (bad) and Wednesdays (not all that great, either), and it’s about time someone recognised Tuesdays for being generally all right days.

None of this has much relevance in regards to this post, but I thought I’d just throw it out there. On to the pictures, then. Yes: pictures.

The things you find while idly browsing the network on a Friday afternoon (part 2)

November 15th, 2007

So it’s not Friday – it’s Thursday – but here, as promised, is another piece of art discovered, quite accidentally, while browsing the ancient bowels and long-forgotten directories of the Funcom network on a Friday afternoon not long ago.

This one is a marketing image from The Longest Journey. I don’t think it was ever used, but I could be wrong:

The things you find while idly browsing the network on a Friday afternoon (part 1)

It’s old, and you probably haven’t seen it (unless you’re one of the few who read an obscure article in an obscure – and free – Oslo newspaper1 eight years ago): a picture of The Longest Journey’s April climbing into, um, a weird flying vehicle. Of some sort.

Merry pumpkin day!

October 31st, 2007

Do you ‘celebrate’ Hallowe’en? Do you dress up as witches, midgets, or accountants, go trick-and-treating, and eat way too much candy? I’m guessing – hoping – that most of you are a little too old to go door-to-door on All Hallow’s Eve wearing home-made costumes, but hey, whatever rocks your boat. Personally, I want to see an April-Zoë-Kian team knocking on neighbourhood doors during Samhain: that would totally destroy the Dubya masks and the too-short Superman capes.

On fans and other things

October 20th, 2007

We1 have the bestest fans of them all:

Frag Doll Jinx. Favourite games include The Longest Journey. Favourite character? April Ryan. Longest spree? “36 consecutive hours on The Longest Journey.” That’s dedication for you. But what about Dreamfall, Jinx? Granted, it wouldn’t take you thirty-six hours, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. (Thanks, Famine!)

We’ve just won a million dollars!

August 15th, 2007

Not really, no, but The Longest Journey is now – according to PC Gamer UK’s Top 100 Games list for 2007 – the 18th best PC game of all time.

Of. All. Time. Or at least until next year’s list is published.

That’s…wow, that’s pretty damn cool. Number eighteen is way up there, and we’re certainly in good company. World of Warcraft is at number one, and for sheer number of entertainment hours delivered, that’s hard to argue with.

As for my favourite adventure game, it’s at number twenty-nine – and I would be the first to argue that it should be placed ahead of The Longest Journey in any best-ever list. But that’s just one man’s opinion. This is PC Gamer. You don’t argue with the experts.

(Thanks for the heads up, Tom.)

In good company

April 19th, 2007

A couple of days ago, IGN posted a top ten list of point & click adventure games, and The Longest Journey landed at the bottom of page two, just above Grim Fandango. I’m not sure if it’s an actual countdown (there are no numbers), but if it is, and TLJ is #2, then hurray!

And it’s not just good company – it’s great company. The Monkey Islands, Police Quest, Leisure Suit Larry, and the aforementioned Grim Fandango – all the classics. It’s like starting a band and being compared with The Beatles. I’m not saying we necessarily deserve the honour (it’s all subjective anyway), but we’re very happy about it regardless.

EDIT: There was a big, fat #2 pasted on top of the image accompanying our entry, so, um, yeah. #2! Huzzah! It’s also heartening to see IGN sticking with the “disappointing sequel” editorial stance, despite the world thinking otherwise. Not saying Dreamfall belongs on the list (particularly since it’s not point-and-click), but ‘disappointing’ may not be the common perception. I always look to player reviews as an indication of what most people actually think, and an 8.7 average from 2337 votes at GameSpot – which is very much a console oriented site – ain’t bad at all.
